In a dazzling celebration of the world’s most captivating islands, Salt Spring Island has secured a spot on Big 7 Travel’s annual ranking of the best islands to visit in 2024.

Only 50 locations were listed, and among the Canadian locations that made the list, two are in BC: Salt Spring and Haida Gwaii. Prince Edward Island also made the list.

Salt Spring Island ranked 24th among the best islands, while Haida Gwaii claimed the 28th spot. Prince Edward Island took 17th place among the best islands globally.

Located between the mainland and Vancouver Island, the travel website described Salt Spring Island as having lifestyle as laid-back as its waves.

Renowned for its unique microclimate, Salt Spring enjoys more sunshine than most of British Columbia, making it a sun-soaked haven perfect for relaxation and exploration.

“This groovy Gulf Island sees more sunshine than most of British Columbia thanks to its unique microclimate,” reads Big 7 Travel’s description on Salt Spring.

“Floating in the shimmering Pacific Ocean between the mainland and Vancouver Island, Salt Spring was once home to a sizeable community of hippies and today it encapsulates chilled-out BC.”

“The island is encircled by white sandy stretches and punctuated with pretty painted wooden houses, with terraced vineyards, organic farms and brilliant boutiques squeezed between,” the description continued.

While Salt Spring Island shines brightly in the 24th spot, the top honour goes to Grenada, an island country in the Caribbean known for its stunning beaches, spice plantations, and vibrant culture.

Earlier this month, Vancouver Island was named the best island in Canada by travel magazine Travel + Leisure.
