If you’re planning a trip to Tofino or Ucluelet this summer, you’ll want to be aware of a new warning from Parks Canada.
A bear has recently been spotted near the multi-use pathway connecting Tofino and Ucluelet, prompting Parks Canada to issue a public warning for visitors using the trail.
The 25-kilometre pathway is one of Vancouver Island’s most popular routes for cycling, walking and running, attracting thousands of locals and tourists each year.
While bear sightings are not uncommon on the west coast, Parks Canada is reminding visitors to take extra precautions while using the trail.
Cyclists are encouraged to slow down and make plenty of noise, as riding quickly and quietly can increase the chances of surprising a bear. Visitors should also stay alert, travel in groups whenever possible, keep children close and avoid wearing headphones so they can hear what’s happening around them.
Anyone heading out on the trail is encouraged to carry bear spray and know how to use it. Dogs must remain on a leash at all times.
If you do encounter a bear, Parks Canada advises staying calm, giving the animal plenty of space and slowly backing away while speaking in a calm voice. Visitors should never run or attempt to distract a bear by throwing food, clothing or other objects.
Anyone who spots a bear along the pathway is asked to report the sighting to Parks Canada staff.
The bear warning remains in effect until further notice.
