More than three decades later, Vancouver Islanders still hope and talk about the four-year-old boy who went missing and hasn’t been seen since.
On March 24th, 1991, the Victoria community was shaken by the disappearance of four-year-old Michael Wayne Dunahee from the playground at Blanshard Elementary School.

Thirty-four years later, his absence remains one of Canada’s most enduring mysteries, leaving an indelible mark on Vancouver Island and beyond.
Michael was born on May 12th, 1986, to parents Crystal and Bruce Dunahee. Described as an outgoing and articulate child, Michael had a keen interest in planes, cars, and his favourite—Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. His sister, Caitlin, recalls fond memories of their childhood together, highlighting his adventurous spirit and loving nature.
The Dunahee family attended a flag football game at Blanshard Elementary School on that fateful Sunday. Around 12:30 p.m., Michael asked to play at the nearby playground.
Despite a mother’s intuition that “something wasn’t quite right,” Crystal allowed him to go, instructing him to wait there for his father. Minutes later, Michael had vanished without a trace. An immediate search involving family, friends, and eventually hundreds of volunteers and police officers commenced but yielded no clues.
Michael’s disappearance prompted one of the largest missing-child investigations in Canadian history. Over the years, more than 11,000 tips have been received, yet no solid leads have emerged.
In 2021, to mark the 30th anniversary of his disappearance, the VicPD launched an online tip portal, which continues to gather information in hopes of solving the case.
The Dunahee family’s tragedy spurred significant community action. Crystal Dunahee became a prominent advocate for missing children, serving as president of Child Find British Columbia. The annual “Keep the Hope Alive” walk/run was established to raise awareness and funds for Child Find BC, drawing participants from across the region to support the cause and honour Michael’s memory.
On Sunday, VicPD participated in the run/walk and Chief Del Manak joined the Dunahee family during the run. Several VicPD officers were present to assist with traffic control and helped keep everyone attending safe.
The investigation remains active, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
Tips can be submitted through the dedicated portal or by contacting the Victoria Police Department’s tip line at 250-995-7444. The community holds onto hope that one day, answers will emerge, and Michael can be brought home.
Michael Dunahee’s disappearance is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring strength of a community united in hope. As we mark 34 years since that tragic day, Vancouver Island continues to remember Michael, supporting ongoing efforts to find answers and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
