After 822 games and more than a decade patrolling NHL blue lines, Victoria native Tyson Barrie has officially retired from professional hockey.
The 34-year-old defenceman carved out a reputation as one of the league’s most dynamic offensive blueliners. Drafted 64th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2009, Barrie broke into the NHL during the 2011–12 season and quickly made a name for himself as a power-play specialist.
His vision and puck-moving ability turned him into a key piece wherever he played.
Barrie suited up for five teams over his career—the Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators and Calgary Flames—finishing with 109 goals, 396 assists and an impressive 505 points.

Among his career highlights was quarterbacking Edmonton’s power play in 2021, helping the Oilers boast the league’s top-ranked unit.
Before the NHL spotlight, Barrie grew up in Greater Victoria, attending school in Colwood and playing minor hockey with the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies.
His junior career with the Kelowna Rockets solidified his path to the pros after becoming the franchise’s all-time leading scorer among defencemen and won WHL Defenceman of the Year in 2010.
Barrie’s final professional season saw him sign a one-year deal with Calgary.
After attending training camp on a tryout, he earned a contract but ultimately finished the year with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers before deciding it was time to step away.
