Victoria has done it!

The 2024 Global Destination Sustainability-Index (GDS-Index) results are out, and our beautiful capital city has been ranked the most sustainable destination in North America.

Beating out the likes of Montreal, Quebec City, Edmonton, and Ottawa, Victoria has proven that sustainability is more than just a buzzword—it’s a way of life here.

If you’re wondering what the GDS-Index is, it’s a global sustainability performance ranking used by over 100 cities.

It measures how well destinations like Victoria perform when it comes to both environmental and social sustainability. Think climate action, circular economy practices, and regenerative tourism—all things that are helping shape a greener future for tourism.

According to the report, Victoria didn’t just snag top spot in North America, we also landed 22nd globally and were ranked as the third-highest small city worldwide.

Not bad, right? It’s only our second year participating in the GDS-Index, and we’ve already made it to the international top 40 list!

A lot of credit goes to the powerhouse teamwork between Destination Greater Victoria (DGV) and the City of Victoria.

From the city’s robust climate action plans to its expansive bike lanes and high walkability, we’re showing the world how to balance tourism with environmental stewardship and community well-being.

One of our standout features is our hotels, many of which hold sustainability certifications, highlighting the local tourism industry’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Plus, the Victoria Conference Centre is fully carbon neutral—an impressive achievement for a venue of its size!

Victoria was a finalist for the GDS Innovation Award due to a partnership between DGV, the City, and the Greater Victoria Housing Society. They’re directing Municipal Regional District Tax funds from online accommodations into 40 affordable housing units for hotel and hospitality workers—an example of sustainable community building!

While the GDS-Index is a huge win, it’s just the beginning.

The goal is to use these rankings as a roadmap to continue pushing boundaries in sustainability, whether it’s attracting eco-conscious business events or building a greener visitor economy.

As Mayor Marianne Alto said, “Our city has set high standards for sustainability, not just in North America but globally. The GDS-Index recognition highlights our collective efforts to create a city that prioritizes the well-being of its residents, protects our environment, and fosters responsible tourism.”

Victoria’s sustainability game is strong, and it’s not just a trend—it’s a commitment to ensuring our city remains vibrant and eco-friendly for generations to come.

So next time you walk or bike through town, give yourself a pat on the back—you’re part of something much bigger.
