Canada’s most anticipated culinary ranking is back, and this year’s list is the result of the most extensive judging panel in its history.

For the 2025 edition of Canada’s 100 Best, two Vancouver Island restaurants made it within the top 50: Pluvio in Ucluelet and Marilena in Victoria, respectively.

According to a media release, 160 judges made up the voting panel, with ranking systems based on a number of factors, including service, wine program, food quality and décor.

The group of judges consisted of food writers, chefs, restaurateurs, critics and passionate culinary enthusiasts—with each region across the country represented proportionally based on population.

Ranking 36th, Pluvio opened in 2019 and is owned and operated by Warren Barr and Lily Verney-Downey.

It’s said to have a warm and casual atmosphere, featuring a tasting menu of five-plus hyperseasonal courses. Food sourcing is local, from the foraged to the farmed citruses and truffles.

Marilena, a luxurious seafood restaurant which opened in 2023, wasn’t far behind in 39th place—highlighted for their culinary ambition, back-lit art, dramatic lighting and plush banquettes.

Sushi Chef Ilhan Yu (ex-Miku) rules the raw bar, and talented chef Kristian Eligh (ex-Hawksworth) oversees the main kitchen.

Each restaurant is recognized for delivering an exceptional culinary experience, and the list is a celebration of the creativity, dedication, and talent within the Canadian food scene.
