Tofino is no stranger to attracting visitors from around the world, but the popular Vancouver Island destination is now getting some major recognition heading into 2027.
According to a new report from travel search engine Skyscanner, Tofino has been named one of the top 10 trending travel destinations for 2027, placing alongside destinations in Europe, Asia and the Caribbean.
The small coastal community landed in 10th place on the international list, with flight searches for Tofino increasing by an impressive 83% year-over-year.
Skyscanner’s rankings highlight destinations experiencing some of the largest increases in traveller interest, based on flight search data.
And while places like Cardiff, Wales, and St. George’s, Grenada, topped the rankings, Tofino was one of just two Canadian destinations to make the list.
The other was Penticton, BC, which ranked fifth with a 137% increase in flight searches.
For those familiar with Vancouver Island’s west coast, Tofino’s growing popularity probably won’t come as much of a surprise.
Known for its expansive sandy beaches, ancient rainforests, world-class surfing and laid-back atmosphere, the community has long been a favourite getaway for both Canadian and international travellers.
Skyscanner highlighted those same qualities when explaining why Tofino deserves a spot among the world’s trending destinations.
“Wild beaches, ancient rainforest and a laid-back surf culture make Tofino one of Canada’s most rewarding coastal escapes,” the travel company wrote.
“It’s the perfect place to slow down, reconnect with nature and enjoy a memorable summer getaway without leaving the country.”
Visitors can spend their days exploring Long Beach, catching waves at Cox Bay or Chesterman Beach, wandering through the community’s shops and restaurants, or experiencing the surrounding wilderness.
And while summer remains a popular time to visit, Tofino has also become known for its winter storm-watching season, when powerful Pacific storms draw visitors to the west coast.
How Tofino compares to the rest of the world
Tofino found itself in some interesting company on Skyscanner’s list of trending destinations for 2027.
Cardiff, United Kingdom, claimed the top spot with a staggering 1,046% increase in flight searches, followed by St. George’s, Grenada, at 156%, and Tivat, Montenegro, at 149%.
Other destinations making the top 10 included Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, Salzburg in Austria, Bergen in Norway, Olbia in Italy and Podgorica in Montenegro.
The rankings were based on increases in return flight searches between January 1st and June 17th, 2026, compared with the same period in 2025.
While the figures reflect increased interest rather than confirmed visitor arrivals, they suggest Vancouver Island’s west coast continues to capture the attention of travellers looking for their next getaway.
And with Tofino now sitting alongside some of the world’s most sought-after destinations, it appears Vancouver Island’s reputation as a travel hotspot is showing no signs of slowing down.
