Parks Canada issues wolf warning for Tofino’s Long Beach area

First rule, don’t run.
(Anthony Bucci)

If you’re planning a trip to Tofino’s Long Beach, Parks Canada wants you to be extra cautious.

Wolves have been spotted in the area, and an official warning is now in effect.

The advisory, issued on September 18th and lasting until further notice, aims to help visitors avoid negative encounters with these wild animals.

To stay safe, Parks Canada suggests hiking in a group, making noise along the way, and never leaving food or garbage behind. They also remind visitors to look for signs like tracks or droppings. If you’re bringing kids or dogs, keep them close; or better yet, leave pets at home this time.

First rule, don’t run. Instead, pick up small kids, stay together, and slowly back away while keeping eye contact.

Wave your arms, yell, and try to look as big as possible. If you have an air horn, now’s the time to use it.

If a wolf gets too close, throw sticks or rocks. If things escalate, Parks Canada states to use bear spray and fight back.

The warning will stay in place until further notice. Anyone who spots a wolf in the Long Beach area is asked to call park staff right away at 250-726-3604.
